Thank Goodness I Was in the Quilt Shop!

It all started with a urinary tract infection. UTIs and I have become very well acquainted over the past 40 years or so. I'd been battling this particular infection for almost two months, and in spite of several rounds of antibiotics, it simply didn't want to go away.

I wasn't feeling too wonderful after lunch last Tueseay, and I thought that a bit of fresh air would help. Running a couple of errands had sounded like a good idea when I left the house, but the longer I was out the worse I felt. I should have gone home, but I wanted to make the most important stop first. Fabric, of course.

The Calico House is a great little quilt shop and only minutes from my house. I'm there at least once a week, so they know me well. I found fabrics for the inner border and the binding on my elf quilt almost immediately. I was feeling pretty awful.  As I paid for the fabric a circle of gray fog began to close in on my vision, and everything started to spin.

Thank goodness, I was in this particular store. Janeese, the owner, recognized that I was about to faint. She pushed a chair under me, and told me to put my head down. Then she and Sandy got a bench from the hallway, put a pillow on it, and helped me lie down. Janeese was so worried that she wanted to drive me home, but after fifteen minutes or so, my head cleared enough that I was sure I could make it to my house on my own.

Right after I got home, dizziness, fever, and chills set in. I was terribly cold, and I began shaking violently. My hubby is not well and no longer drives, so I called my son. He hurried over, took me to the emergency room, and stayed until I was settled in for the night. My UTI had developed into a kidney infection and my white blood cell count was ridiculously high. For the next two days as I was pumped full of antibiotics, my children and grandchildren took over the care of their Papa. By the time I was released, I felt better than I had in weeks.

My quilting was delayed, but that's of minor importance compared to health.

My new fabrics. The stripes on the narrow border will be repeated on the binding. The backing is fun, too, and just the right colors.

  1. So glad you are okay. Lucky that you had this happen someplace safe and not in the car or in a strange store. You take care of yourself, and please keep us posted.

  2. If you've been getting UTIs regularly and the latest turned into a kidney infection, please get checked for diabetes. That is often an early sign.

  4. Please please take better care of yourself. As my doctor very angrily told me, if you have a fainting spell you should NOT be driving yourself to the doctor, or even home.

    1. Your doctor was right, Denise. I was lucky to get home without incident. At least I didn't try to drive myself to the hospital. Thank you for showing such kind concern.

  5. So sorry to hear you are battling the 'germs' sounds like time for a pot of chicken soup and a few days rest....you still have time to finish the quilt before the Holidays. Take it easy, we are not as young as we once were.

    1. Thank you, Carole. I may not have the quilt and the pattern completed by next Saturday as planned. Life intervenes, and we can only do what we can do. We are definitely not as young as we once were.

  9. took a spill at the DMV myself just over 2 weeks ago... it wasn't pleasant, but very nice people helped me up... I waited in my car also until I felt a bit better and drove to the small ER clinics that are setup around town. I knew I'd hurt my wrist... Either or, I am glad you are ok, and I'm sorry you had to deal with that. This is a beautiful project, I can't wait to dig in when my wrist is better.. broke it that day, so I'm a bit down for the count also. Hugs!!

    1. Hi Marian. I'm so sorry to hear about your wrist. It isn't only painful, but a broken wrist greatly limits what you can do. Wishing you a very speedy recovery. Sending hugs right back to you!!
